If you like foreigns, I recommend Raise the Red Lantern. It's kind of melodramatic, but it is SO good. It's about a girl who goes to be the fifth wife of some rich chinese guy, and naturally all hell breaks loose. It's really good, though. Under no circumstances should you rent the Promise. It's kind of dumb. I watched about a quarter of it and got bored. It's too Kung-Pow-meets-Hidden-Dragon comic kung fu crap. I also reccommend Seven Years in Tibet. Also (brad pitt aside) veeeery good.

If you like clean anime, rent anything by Hiyao Miyazaki. Um, Howl's Moving Castle or Princess Mononoke are the only two I've seen, but they're both pretty awesome. AND! The voice of Howl is done by Christian Bale. ^_^

Also in the foreign section, rent Jeux D'Enfants and the City of Lost Children. And Amelie if you haven't seen it yet. Audrey Tatou is adorable, and the first two are something everybody should see at one point or another. Hope that helped.

Anything with Myrna Loy and William Powell, particularly Double Wedding, I love You Again, or any of the Thin Man series.

Sap!

Although in all seriousness, I liked that movie too. I thought she was Gwyneth Paltrow through the first third of it though.

Wow. Thanks! Those are some great recommendations, although the simple fact that you mentioned The Promise makes me kinda want to rent it just to see if I'd hate it too. Oh, and I've seen Princess Mononoke. Loved it. I'm glad you went with foreign recommendations because that's one of the sections I always browse but never know what to get! :D

for Hiyao Miyazaki movies, the very best two are probably Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, but there are various versions of Totoro with different quality dubbing and subtitling. Also see Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds.

i also second william powell movies, though i haven't seen Double Wedding. a great one (sans myrna loy) is My Man Godfrey. and some other great screwball comedies: It Happened One Night, The More the Merrier, The Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby, The Lady Eve, His Girl Friday, and the mister movies: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, and Meet John Doe. ok, that last one doesn't have Mr. in the title, but still...

@Bizzkitt: The Promise was buttfucking retarded and not in a good way.

Btw, do you have a dvd burner in your computer cause I have something you might be interested in if you do. Message me on a messenger program (I have trillian) for details.
