Well right now I have a Medion. My mom got it at Walmart for $400, she said "I know some people" which I think loosely translates to her having blown a guy for it. It's actually not too bad of a computer after I installed some more RAM and a new (but cheap) sound card. Over the years the DVD drives have gone out from copying too many movies so I've installed a few of those. Recently my CD-ROM died and for some reason I'm having a hard time finding a CD-ROM drive. They just don't make plain old cheap ones anymore, they're all DVD-R lightscribe, blah blah blah. I just want one uber DVD burner and a shit ass CD-ROM right below it, that way I can play the Sims and rip movies at the same time. So right now the CD-ROM bay is empty.

Anyways, my graphics card is way out of date and with all the things I would need to replace to get a new graphics card running I might as well just get a whole new computer. Since I've installed my own soundcard, ram, dvd burner, & cd-rom I think I have just enough experience with the inside of a computer to not totally fail at building my own. What do you think?

videocard will likely cost the most, then processor, then motherboard. You can use the same HDD if you want, but you'll need all new RAM.

try the online DVD-R supply stores, like meritline.com or supermediastore.com. they sell the DVD burners at good prices because they make money off of the blank DVD-Rs, etc.

Different motherboards have different chipsets for the processor and RAM. Chances are, the new mobo you get won't be able to slot the RAM you have now.

Also, when I'm piecing together a system, for myself or for others, I always start at NewEgg. Good, reputable site with a great layout for shopping and a good secure checkout. Also, lots of sales and combo deals afoot.
